Moving The Conversation On: Beyond Duty of Care

In July, eTravelSafety have the privilege of sponsoring the Beyond Duty of Care conference. As its name implies, the conference is focused on Safety and Security beyond what the industry normally defines as Duty of Care.

Not only is this a very important conversation to be having for our travellers, it is THE conversation to be having across the industry.


"We Will Do The Right Thing"

Recently, we were working with one of the largest tech companies in the world, who had the single most refreshing attitude towards Duty of Care – an attitude which I believe is on the bleeding edge of what will become normal.

Their attitude was simply “We will do the right thing”.

They binned off a lot of the processes and procedures that complicated and even slowed down essential care or services, giving them the freedom to just get it sorted.

Admittedly, they have the resources to fix pretty much any known solution from petty cash, but crucially, this afforded them the ability to think differently.


Doing The Right Thing > Doing Things Right

As I left, I reflected and thought more on the subject and realised this attitude was cultural across their organisation. This realisation got me thinking about how their employees must feel, knowing that their organisation has their back and will always prioritise doing the right thing over doing things right.

Is it any wonder they are able to attract the very best talent around the world to support their business to make them even more successful?


Business Enablers, Not Just Risk Initiatives

And this is my point, really. When we in the industry stop thinking just about process (although that has its place) and start to think about how we can impact the ability of an organisation to be successful – for us to be pivotal in their ability to do business – we can move the conversation on to a place where we are not just a cost centre or an expensive insurance policy, but rather an enabler for business.

What if, through our products and services, we are able to improve the organisation’s ability to attract and retain world class talent so they can outgun their competition?

What if we are able to train people on how to stay safe so that when they travel, their minds are focused on their work and not clouded by anxiety around their safety?

The Travel Safety industry is still relatively new (well from the time Stuart coined the phrase at least) but for us to really thrive, we need to be seen as business enablers and not just part of a risk initiative.


Travel Safety Done Right

For me, done right, Travel Safety:

  • Increases employee well-being
  • Protects vulnerable people
  • Improves productivity
  • Enables better relationships and communication
  • Positively impacts talent attraction and retention
  • Reduces absence
I could go on, but I think I have made my point. There are very few industries that can boast on what we do for an organisation, but this can only happen if we, ourselves, move the conversation on, and realise we are more than Duty of Care.
