Mentor Group was asked to design a bespoke programme for recently appointed line managers in order to rapidly develop their skills to manage their teams to high levels of performance.
As a successful FTSE 100 company, Johnson Matthey recognises the vital importance of good people management in achieving their corporate objectives. Due to the demanding commercial environment, a need was identified for a programme that would rapidly develop the ability of newly appointed line managers. The aim was to provide them with practical skills, techniques and abilities to successfully manage their teams to high levels of performance. The programme needed to support them in making the demanding "step up" from employee to line manager and provide them with a firm management foundation to develop their skills going forward.
Mentor Group assessed the requirement to ensure that the programme created would meet the needs of the target audience. We created a new cutting edge programme that was matched to the Johnson Matthey leadership framework, fitting well with the company's culture and ways of working. Our solution offered an innovative blended approach integrating:
- A 3 day workshop module
- Two virtual reinforcement sessions
- 1:1 telephone based coaching for each participant
All programme content is orientated around the real day to day challenges participants faced as new line managers, with a strong emphasis on back at work application and action. It encourages the sharing of experience & development of strong networks across the business, to share their insights & link learning to business results.
Johnson Matthey have been a customer of Mentor for over 15 years. They see the continuously developing Mentor programme as making a crucial and consistent contribution to the success of their business.
In this case the line managers of the participants were surveyed for feedback on the behavioural changes and improvements they had seen in attendees of the programme. After 8 weeks:
- 88% reported improvements in the participants' ability to manage their teams
- 86% reported improvement in the participants' ability to coach their teams
- 87% reported improvements in the participants' ability to manage performance
